Cospas-Sarsat System has stopped satellite processing of 121.5/243 MHz With a 406 MHz beacon, the position of the distress can be relayed to rescue services more quickly, more reliably and with greater accuracy.

121.5 mhz beacons can still be used as "homing devices". BUT you must have a means of raising the alarm eg 406 mhz beacon or VHF. Some European authorities insist on it.
