AEROSAFE brand and other lifejackets, including waist worn pouch bouancy aids. Lifejacket are designed to keep a person afloat at an angle that holds the airway open and upright. A minimum buoyancy of 150 Newtons (35 pounds) is required and this give a freeboard to mouth and nose of approx 4-6 cms.
High buoyancy lifejackets 275 Newtons (60 pounds) are available for use with heavy clothing or dry suits and help with the righting movement of the lifejacket. However due to the size of the inflatable chamber on your chest they can hinder progress into a liferaft or rescue craft.
Crotch or thigh straps help to prevent the lifejacket riding up once in the water. The waistbelt on any lifejacket must be tightened.
A lifejacket will turn you into the weather so consider one with a sprayhood. The lifejacket bladders are bright orange or lime green or yellow, and all lifejackets should be fitted with reflective tape, and a whistle. The whistle is used to attract other survivors in the water ( so you can huddle together) and also to attract the attention of rescuers. |

The high pressure gas cylinders fitted to aviation rafts must have a special overpressure release valve which vents to atmosphere. Marine liferaft gas cylinders actually inflate the liferaft in the event of an overpressure. You will probably get away with this on a yacht but in the confines of an aircraft cockpit a rapidly inflating liferaft could ruin your day! |
